The Modular Social Housing Project for Uruguay is part of the framework of the International Competition on Social Housing in Wood, organized by ALFA EuropeAid Co-operation Office and CYTED Ibero-American Cooperation. This competition involved universities from Latin America and Europe, including the Universidad del Bío-Bío (Chile), Universidad de la República (Uruguay), Universidad Nacional de Tucumán (Argentina), Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Universidad de Guanajuato (Mexico), Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (Spain), University of Helsinki (Finland), Fachhochschule Biberach (Germany), and the Institute for Timber Construction at Zurich University (Switzerland). The initiative was part of the ALFA Europe-Latin America Project aimed at fostering social housing solutions for Latin America.

Our project proposes a modular timber construction system designed to address social housing challenges with adaptability and user-centered flexibility. The system is structured to allow for growth and transformation over time, providing a framework that respects the existing urban fabric while offering solutions for informal settlements. Its modular design enables rapid deployment, cost efficiency, and adaptability to different contexts, ensuring sustainability and enhancing community identity. A pilot implementation was designed for the regularization of the "Villa Roberto Farro" settlement in Montevideo, Uruguay, integrating the modular system into pre-existing urban patterns.
